In spite of being Crater Lake's only two islands, Wizard Island (pictured on the left) and Phantom Ship (pictured on the right) have very different sizes, formations, and geologic histories. Wizard Isalnd, the bigger of the two, is 232 meters tall at its heighest point, with a surface area of about 2.58 square kilometers. Continuous buildup of hot cinders which were ejected from the sea floor after Mt. Mazama's eruption created Wizard Island. Its oldest trees are 800 years old, therefore we know Wizard Island has been above the surface of the water for almost a thousand years. On the contrary, Phantom Ship is about 152 meters long, 51 meters tall, and 60 meters wide. While it may appear small, it is longer than a football field and taller than a 16 story building. Phantom Ship is not only solid rock, it's also the remaining part of a filled section of fissure which lava oozed from. It is separated from the mainland by a shallow channel measuring about a 60 meter wide channel. Although these islands have two contrasting backgrounds, they both provide astoundingly old creation evidence, as well as a popular tourist site.
