Pumice Castle is one of the most beloved and visited tourist attractions by the 482,000 people which visit Crater Lake National Park annually. The structure is 396 meters above the lake, and it is roughly 57 meters thick at some points, while it sits 121 meters below the Crater rim. Colored orange because of its main rock layer, orange pumice, Pumice Castle gives a great example of geologic profile. It takes many years to form one layer of a geologic profile alone. The depth or thicknesses of these profiles vary based upon the animals and climate which occurred during any specific time period. As you can tell, rock layers form horizontally, and Pumice Castle's different colored horizontal layers were caused by the different types of rock which erupted from Mount Mazama, and fused together over hundreds of years. Pumice Castle gives a perfect perception of geologic pastime complemented by a bright, scenic view.
